Book Summary:
It's been four years since rain fell on the Oklahoma panhandle and the closeness between the Stanton twins has dried up as much as the land. Howe Stanton has been practicing running away and longs for the family to quit this dusty landscape for the promise of California, where so many of his friends have already gone. Despite the scoliosis that causes Joanna Stanton near-constant pain, she isn't ready to give up on the family farm just yet. When the twins father leaves the family behind to find work in California, and their older brother suffers a serious accident, saving the farm falls on the shoulders of Howe and Joanna.
Alyssa Colman paints a vivid picture of what life was like during the Oklahoma dust bowl, the challenges and the triumphs of the Stanton twins, their family and their community. Winner of the 2024 Schneider Family Book Award.
