In conjunction with National Stitch In Day
National Embroidery Month is celebrated every February since 1992 and is the official Stitch In Day, organized by the Embroiderers' Guild of America is always the first Saturday in February to promote need arts like embroidery, knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint and more!
planning to have a "Stitcher’s Scavenger Hunt" to help neighbors break the ice. It’s just a simple list to encourage people to find someone using a specific color, someone who is a "first-time learner," or someone practicing "visible mending" (using embroidery to fix a hole in their favorite jeans!). My goal is to make this a joyful, low-mess, and high-connection day that celebrates the library as a the true "Makerspace" it is
One of the most curious things I found is that embroidery is actually one of humanity's oldest "technologies"—with some of the earliest examples dating back to 30,000 B.C.! I love the idea of sparking curiosity by sharing how stitching was even used by NASA; they hired expert seamstresses to "hand-stitch" the software for the Apollo moon landing. It’s such a fun way to show that while these are "old" crafts, they have always been at the cutting edge. From a community standpoint, I’m also inspired by the health benefits; researchers have found that the rhythmic "flow state" of stitching can actually lower a person's heart rate significantly, making the library the perfect sanctuary for a mid-winter "mental health" break.
I was imagining a "Curiosity First" approach that could be really fun for the patrons. Maybe some "mystery" close-up photos of colorful threads or needles in the library stacks to get people guessing what’s coming. From there, we could lean into the "did you know" facts—like the idea that whether you're working on a floral embroidery, a geometric needlepoint, or a funny cross-stitch quote, you're practicing analog coding. —before finally inviting everyone to bring their hoops and needles to the library on the 7th. It creates a nice little story arc that builds excitement for our makers!
